DURYEA


BARBARA BROKAW DURYEA, 86, passed away July 7, 2003. An active civic leader, she organized and participated in many youth and nature programs in Bellaire and LaPorte, TX.  Born February 18, 1917, in Blackfoot, Idaho.  Father James Barton Brokaw; Mother Mary Gray Marston Brokaw. Husband William Kenneth Duryea, deceased.  She attended University of Texas, Austin, TX and received her B.A. from University of Houston.  A long-time resident of Bellaire and La Porte, TX; and recently of New Braunfels and College Station, TX. Retired special education teacher, Houston ISD.  Girl Scout leader for 40 years; taught many teenagers to sail at Girl Scout Camp Casa Mare on Galveston Bay.  In the 1950s, she organized the Bellaire Club, a dance venue for teens.  A leader of wildlife trips with the Outdoor Nature Club, she conducted nature trips on Buffalo Bayou as item to benefit KUHT-TV.  Founder and charter member of Galveston Bay Foundation.  Chairperson of the Ladies Association and taught in the womenís sailing program at the Houston Yacht Club.  Member of Bellaire Presbyterian Church and St John's Episcopal Church in LaPorte.  Survived by daughter Dian and husband Frank; Tony and wife Peggy, Doug and wife Ellen.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 815 South Broadway LaPorte, TX at 2:00 p.m. on Sat., July 26. A reception will follow at the Houston Yacht Club in Shoreacres, TX.
